For many neurodivergent individuals and people with disabilities, the workplace can present unnecessary barriers - not because of a lack of ability, but because the right support simply isn't in place.

The UK Government's Access to Work (AtW) grant exists to change that, by funding practical, personalised workplace support so you can thrive in your role.

Yet many people who are entitled to this support never apply. The process can feel confusing, bureaucratic, or simply overwhelming — especially if you're already navigating the daily challenges of a neurodivergent profile. At Wired Differently, we're here to change that.

What Is the Access to Work Grant?

Access to Work is a government-funded scheme that supports people with a disability, long-term health condition, or neurodivergent profile — including ADHD, autism, dyslexia and dyspraxia. It is designed to remove practical barriers in the workplace so you can perform at your best.

What can the grant can fund?

  • Workplace coaching

  • Assistive technology and specialist equipment

  • Mental health support

  • Communication support

  • Travel support if public transport isn't accessible

  • Other reasonable workplace adjustments

Importantly, Access to Work is not means-tested and does not affect your other benefits. Its purpose is straightforward: to help you start, stay, and succeed in work.

Why Applying for Access to Work Can Feel Difficult

Although the scheme is genuinely valuable, the application process can feel daunting. Many people are unsure whether they qualify, what support they can request, or how to clearly explain their workplace challenges. The prospect of an Access to Work assessment can add another layer of anxiety.

Neurodivergent people often minimise their difficulties or find it hard to translate day-to-day challenges into formal language. This can lead to under-requesting support — or not applying at all. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone, and you do not have to navigate it by yourself.
